Down Memory Lane

Again another satisfying night in our 6ft 6in wide bed and an excellent breakfast then a quick session updating our emails etc., before we wandered up to the underground railway station, Line “D” and off to Belgrano.

For some of our non family readers, I lived here in Buenos Aires for 4 years leaving when I was 7 years old so thought it might be fun to re-visit the areas where I lived, Ha Ha, how things change!!!!!

We started with Belgrano, a suburb of Buenos Aries, getting there via the underground and a 10 minute walk arriving at the Belgrano station, the park outside, and the level crossing, all of which I remember, but that is where it ends!  All the big houses and the whole area has been knocked down and replaced with modernish apartments, well it has been 63 years since I left.  The good thing is that they have retained the original “square blocks” and the tree lined avenues.   We wandered about, walked the length of the railway platform  dodging all the people waiting for the train to take them to Tigre, a destination for the city locals to go at weekends to relax on the coast.  I remember my parents talking about this activity back in 1950, some things don’t change.  We had a very pleasant walk about and what’s more, Christine enjoyed this experience though she was still suffering the effects of the flight.

Next we decided there was time left to go to La Lucila, the other place I lived, however this could prove a little difficult as we had no idea how to get there.  We stopped at a local cafe for a beer and a tea (guess what Christine had!) and with tung in cheek, asked the waiter if he knew. After a few minutes he said we should get the 59 bus, direct, well wonders never ceases but first we had to buy a smart card, then put some money on it, ouch!  We found the local “fag” shop where these cards were sold and when the card was charged with credit, marched off to the appropriate bus stop.  Along came a 59 bus, we hailed it down, that’s what happens here if you want to stop a bus, got on only to be told it was the wrong bus, we said we were told the 59 was what we wanted, the driver in turn gave us a lot of Spanish, though he kept saying number 1 though we had no idea what else he said, but we got off.  After another 5 minutes along came a 59 bus, this one also had a big number 1 in the window, so we got on and it was right.

We sat on this bus not really knowing where we wanted to get off. It is very strange, I remember more about Belgrano where I lived from 1947 – 1949 than la Lucila where I lived 1949 – 1951, and I even went to school there!!!!! Eventually we arrived at the bus terminus so had to get off.  We then got back on the first bus back to the city.  Not a very productive trip but very enjoyable never the less;  it certainly gave us a good look at other areas in BA especially the “sleepy Suberbs” of La Lucila as the bus wound it’s way through suburbia.

We left the bus at our underground station then found that the tickets we had bought earlier in the morning were not actually returns, still we had the plastic card we bought earlier for the bus and that also worked on the train station.   A quick tot up of all the costs associated with two train journeys and two long bus rides totaled circa £3.50!  With the peso so de valued and a cheap cost of living, maybe all British Pensioners should live here!!!!!

Back at the hotel, drink at the bar, e mails etc then off straight out to dine, not a posh expensive restaurant tonight but still one recommended to us for empinadoes and pizza.  We were told that Argentina Pizzas were better than Italian ones, well I think they were right.  We had en excellent dinner, shared starter, half a superb and big Pizza each, a desert that was so big we struggled and all washed down with wine And at a total cost of  about £17.00, as I said, the place to retire to!!!

Leaving the restaurant we heard music so walked up the street and joined the crowd watching singers and dancers celebrating 69 Years of something, very lively then after some time, back to the hotel.

We have to be earlier tomorrow so to bed earlier than usual, we are both tired, till the next blog……..

First Day In Buenos Aires

February 14th, a red letter day, not because it is Valentine’s day but because at 1630 hrs on the 14th February 2005 Christine and I met; yes, here we are 9 years later and still enjoying our lives together, wow, who would have thought it! Anyway back to business.

After an excellent night’s sleep we awoke refreshed after our 26 hour ordeal yesterday, though I am sure it will have been worth it! We naturally exchanged cards and once that “mush” was out of the way, showered and down for breakfast, which by the way was excellent, then to investigate with reception what we could/should do in the limited time we had available.

We decided a city tour would be a good starter and booked the 1445 hrs trip but had to be in reception by 1415 hrs, that gave us about 3 hrs to kill so we had a nice wander around the area of the hotel, sat in the sunshine and enjoyed a coffee, managed a very brief lunch then back to the hotel where our driver was waiting for us. This bus visited a number of hotels, picking up people then we boarded our coach for the actual tour which was due to last 3 hours, though as the traffic was so bad and apparently there were a number of demonstrations happening today, including one about the Falklands war!!! It actually took a little over 4 hours, fortunately our coach was extremely comfortable, much better than the seats on our plane.

Our guide was amazing, he commentated in Spanish and English, but he didn’t go on about any subject in one language for long spells then repeat everything in the second language, no he sort of ran through each topic in both languages without even having to stop and think; very clever and of course you were listening all the time, no time to switch off.

He gave us a good understanding about the history if this area of South America and naturally Buenos Aires in particular, very interesting. He showed us numerous monuments to historical figures involved in the creation of this city and country. We drove past numerous famous buildings (as one does!) including the area where the richest people lived towards the end of the 19th century. These houses were all designed to European architecture but now they are all foreign embassies. Driving through this area suggested we were in a suburb of Paris or Rome.

There is one Boulevard called 9th July, apparently the widest in the world, built to commemorate the countries independence from Spain in 1816 and as big and wide as it is, it still carries too much traffic.

Our coach fought its way around the city and we eventually entered an area called “Bocca”, this was down by the old docks and it was the area where all the Italian immigrants lived and we had a wander about this bustling area but was very surprised that it all closed down at 1800 hrs. We asked our guide why, and he replied that it was not safe around here at night but wouldn’t enlarge on that!!!!!

Back in the coach to the next stop, independence square where we walked around though here there was a Falklands War Rally going on so we kept our traps shut!!!!! Back on the coach then dropped off at our hotel just after1900hrs. We were getting a little concerned as we had booked a table at one of the best restaurants in town on the dock’s waterfront for 2000hrs and we were running late.

A quick shower with a very nice glass of Malbec (bought earlier) whilst we got dressed: down to reception by 1945hrs and ordered a taxi from reception who then said that though we had booked a table, being Valentines night and Friday, we may still have to wait!!!!!

Arrived at the restaurant by by around 2020hrs booked in but as suggested, had to wait until they “readied” a table. We sat in the bar area when they then delivered to our table some empanadas, and we hadn’t even ordered a drink, but they were very nice and we knew then we were in an expensive restaurant. Drinks eventually ordered but as they arrived we were whisked to our table, the drinks followed immediately. Sitting down we were “gob smacked” as there were numerous empty tables though within 15 minutes the place was heaving. Again before we had even opened the menu a plate of Hors D’oeuvres arrived with numerous appetisers including Smoked Salmon and probably one of the finest blue cheeses I have ever tasted.  Right, thats the starters out of the window!  Being in Argentina it had to be steaks and that’s what we ordered and thoroughly enjoyed.  We shared a desert and eventually left, waddling up the road searching for a taxi.  Fortunately the Argentine Peso is very weak against the Euro so the bill was sort of acceptable!!!!

Arrived safely back to the hotel and to bed, after all it was 2330hrs, about 0430 back on the UK!!!  Tomorrow is another day.

UK and more….

Arrived in the wet and the cold, and thought why did we come back a week early!
First stop was the Premier Inn Manchester, so that we could collect the car first thing, not sure if it would start etc, so to save worrying we waited until morning.
Geoff went to collect car, no need to worry started first time on key, plus the slow puncture was fine, so we headed down to Derbyshire, gosh it is cold, having come from 30

Oh dear! The bottles are out again!

Oh dear! The bottles are out again!

degrees it is a shock to the system. Extra jumpers and we were soon ok.

The frozen north!

The frozen north!

It was good catching up with Marian and Martin. Russell had been boarding this week, so we saw him on Friday, he was full of the joys of boarding, and being with his friends all week, so it looks as

Another training day!

Another training day!

though it is going to be an expensive time for them.
Next stop was Mark, Paula and the girls, it was lovely catching up, we don’t see enough of them, but appreciate they are busy people. The new house is lovely, and by the time they have put their touches on it, will be even better, quite a bit to do, as it needs modernising, but I am sure the end project will be good.
Next day we went to see Herbert and Liz, Herbert is struggling a bit at present, so we took lunch in, as he could not face going out, we had a good chat, a few heated discussions on Ryanair, hopefully he improves soon.
We had arranged to stay at Tracy’s for the night, haven’t seen her since the wedding, and it was good to catch up with the gossip, next morning we went for a walk, it was very windy, cold and wet, we went to Henley, crossed the weir there but couldn’t get very far as the fields were flooded, so we called it a day, hope this rain stops soon, otherwise the Thames will burst its banks!

The Thames overflowing!

The Thames overflowing!

Gunwharf was next, and there we stayed for the rest of the time, it was good to be back, although needs some money spent on it, I bought new washing machine and dishwasher, fixed shower and toilet, had the gas boiler serviced, and got the new gas certificate, so we are legal again for tenants.
The girls who rent the flat are lovely, and come and go all the time, mostly they work in the local restaurants in the evening, so for the majority of the time, we enjoyed TV in lounge, I kept Geoff on a strict diet, so we only drank on one night, so hopefully we lost some weight! Andrew popped in one day, with his friend Chase, which was good, hope to go to London when we are back to see his new flat.
We caught up with Kathleen and Tom, Pat, and Doug and Jill, his is why I love coming to England as I get to catch up with my family and friends.
The weather here us really bad with the south west of England suffering the most, but now London is under threat with the Thames about to burst its banks, so very sad for imageeveryone.
Back to Kathleen’s leave all the dirty washing ( she’s good to me) then back to see Herbert and Liz, we struggled to get to them as we had to cross the Thames, we were on a back road! when we got a puncture, Geoff hit a pothole at speed! fortunately it was in the tyre that needs replacing anyway, so in the pouring rain! we waited for green flag to fix it! after an hour they came! fortunately it had stopped raining, so we were soon on our way again.
We had a lovely lunch at Liz and Herbert’s plus a few drinks to revive us, then onto the Hotel, and Geoff took the car to the carpark! we have an early start in the morning!
Set the alarm for 4am but I was awake at 3.30am, so we had a cup of tea, and caught the 4.15am to the airport, we booked our bags in, and then had a full English breakfast, we caught the flight to Madrid, which was on time, then onto Buenos Aries wow what a long day! the flight was twelve hours! we got to the Savoy Hotel at 10.30pm, so by the time we had showered we fell into bed at 11pm so altogether with the time difference in real time we were 24 hours travelling, no wonder we were shattered, but everything went like clockwork.

Trip back to UK

Up early, finished packing, said our goodbyes to Dave, as he was back to work, we were sitting having breakfast when Jane came back, so we packed the car and hit the road.

Jane is going to see her friends in Dubai, so we elected to be dropped off first! we found that we were in the wrong terminal, so we found a bus to take us to terminal 3, then onto check in, where we met a very sullen young man, who would not let me put my small suitcase in the hold, because it weighed 13kgs, he wanted money, but I said forget it we will manage. we were only allowed 30kgs each but in fact I had 41kgs! Where is his sense of humour.

Into security, everything was ok, and onto passport control, there we were told we had to go to another office, we were both a bit worried about that, but then were told they could not follow our journeys in and out of Abu Dhabi, so he duly stamped our passports! and we were on our way again.

Lunch time now, and we found a lovely place, away from the crowds in a Hotel, it was very nice and relaxing.

Then onto gate 18, where we were one of the first on the plane, and met a lovely stewardess, who said she would look after us, and if we wanted to change seats she would see what she could do.  I was very happy where I was, as I had a spare seat next to me, but in the end I felt sorry for the girl sitting next to Geoff , so we swapped! have to say two isle seats is the way to go! We had a lovely trip, with lots of booze coming our way, so no complaints.

Flight arrived on time, luggage collected into a taxi, straight to Hotel and an early night, although it is only 8pm where we have just left it was 1.30am so we are shattered.

Our last day in Abu Dhabi

Awake early, not used to the time difference, so I sneaked downstairs, and put the first load of washing on, have more chance of getting it dry in the sunshine, than in Derbyshire  In the snow !

We met Jane and Dave on stairs, and managed to catch up with the gossip, so many changes in ten days, still they seem happier.

Jane and Dave went for a run with the dogs whilst I did another load of washing, and we had breakfast.

We then went into town to collect our dresses that we have had made! neither of them fitted properly, so we will have to go back later! we then went for a stroll along the waterfront (the corniche) and happened to stop at the Cinnabon shop, so finding a seat looking out to sea, was lovely, the weather was superb, so were the Cinnabon’s our last chance to eat one, before we leave….

We now go to pick up Geoff’s waistcoat, which looked really nice, that did not fit either, so we will have to go and pick that up later as well.  Back home, Jane and Dave go to see Herbie, we wanted to go, but also have to pack, so we decided to not go.  Meanwhile Ella had been ironing all our washing, so we leave with no dirty washing what a result that is.

When Jane and Dave get back, they quickly showered and we were back in the city collecting my dress, then onto a restaurant, only to find where we wanted to go does not open until 7pm, so we opted for the curry house in the Mall where Geoff’s waistcoat is.

We collected the waistcoat, then into the Indian, we had a lovely meal, then home for a chocolate brownie, and gin and tonic, no alcohol served in Mall’s!

A lovely last day, thankyou both for putting up with us, for so long, we have had highs and lows, let’s hope the future will be good for us all.

Back to Abu Dhabi

Yes, today we leave after a wonderful 10 days in this historic Colonial Hotel, our relaxation days between our days out was the right way to visit Sri Lanka. Our three long days out together with out trip around Colombo gave us a very good insight to the life, the sounds and the scenery of this Island located to the Southern Tip of India.

Our last lie in then a relaxed breakfast followed by sitting in the sun and do a last few lengths in the salt water pool.

Christine was straight down to the pool after breakfast but I had to complete the log for our tea plantation trip as I had encountered a few IT issues, still all done and I went down.  After sitting in the sun and getting rather hot we strolled along the beach, had a paddle in the ocean then back into the hotel pool.

Back up to the room for 13000 hrs, a spot of lunch, though a continuation Of breakfast as we pocketed some cheese, biscuits and Jam etc., followed by showers and last minute packing.

We paid our final bill, not as bad as we were expecting, and into the pre-booked taxi and away.  Our trip to the airport was quite sedate this time and it included the Airport Highway, again built by the Chinese.

We were through the airport formalities quickly and then waiting quietly for boarding.

Take off was un eventful, the plane was full and food and drinks were wheeled out. Unfortunately our seats were the ones in front of the row with the emergency exit so therefore didn’t recline but the ones in front of us did. Because the space was tight, our fold down tray was in two halves which was good as I didn’t have enough room to fold down the whole tray, but half was OK. So when the food tray arrived I had to balance my tray on just half of the fold down one. Everything was OK but as I finished eating, so did the lady in front and started to recline her seat, my tray went everywhere, the glass shattered across the aisle, oh dear.  After the cabin staff cleared up, this woman came right back but I had nowhere to go, the tray nearly divided me in two and I was totally hacked off.  I stormed into the business class seats as they were empty, and started reading in comfort, until I was asked to move back.  I explained the situation and told the stewardess what I thought of Sri Lanka Air, but no I had to move back, I said I couldn’t fit in that seat with the one in front in the reclaimed position.

The stewardess then took my boarding stub bad disappeared only to return a few minutes later saying she had swapped someone and I had an other seat to go to.  When I returned to the cabin I noticed Christine had moved into mine and somebody else was in the middle and I had a window seat , first row behind the partitioning bulkhead; that’s better.

Arriving at Abu Dhabi airport, straight through Passport Control, our bags were amongst the first few off so out of the airport and into a taxi within half an hour.

After telling the driver where we wanted to go, that didn’t work, I gave him a piece of paper with the address on, that didn’t work, I turned the piece of paper over and tried the International Emirate’s school is a local landmark, that didn’t work either so he went to ask supervisor, eventually we got under way, found the local mall so we knew our way to the house now but believe it or not it was now when the driver decided to put his “Tom Tom” on!!!!!

Arrived to a dark house, all had gone to bed though Doogle and Oreo and thats just what we did after a great 10 days in Sri Lanka.
